Awards success for students
Plumpton College in East Sussex celebrated student success at the awards ceremony on Friday 18th June. This is an important occasion in the College calendar and allows the College, with parents, invited guests and sponsors to recognise student achievements.
Mr Mike Atkinson, (Chair of Governors), in his introduction outlined the outstanding quality and academic results following the efforts and achievements of students.
Mr Des Lambert, (Principal, Plumpton College), welcomed distinguished guests, visitors, governors, sponsors, staff, students and families.
Distinguished guests included The Vice Lord-Lieutenant of East Sussex; The Chairman of East Sussex County Council; The Chair, Lewes District Council; The Chief Executive of Lewes District Council; The Skills Funding Agency and The Worshipful Mayors of Eastbourne, Newhaven and Lewes Town Councils.
The Principal thanked sponsors, parents, staff, students and guests for their generosity and continued support. The staff were proud of the students, not only in their academic achievements, but in the efforts that they make to attend college, many travelling long distances to attend. He reported on the wide range of development programmes, including the14-16 educational provision and reported on the wide student activity in sports, shows, educational trips, including overseas field trips, other extra-curricular activities and research programmes.
The college is particularly proud of its new facilities including a new library, animal care unit, classrooms, machinery workshops and residential accommodation.
Further development of the college’s out centre at Flimwell and educational facilities on the college farm were also outlined. The College was grateful for the continued support from the University of Brighton for its Higher Education programmes.
The awards were presented by Professor Fred Maillardet, (President, Plumpton College) and Chairman, Plumpton College Charitable Foundation College. Professor Maillardet spoke to the students about the importance of acquiring transferable skills which would equip them well for the future. He also compared the world as it is today with the world when he was a graduate and urged the completing students to try to make it a better world.
Rosie Watts, on behalf of the students proposed a vote of thanks to all present.
In closing the ceremony, the Chairman of the Corporation thanked all staff for their efforts in helping students to achieve transferable skills and, in a changing world, skills which may need to be refreshed. Sponsors were thanked for their time and generosity towards development of a forward-looking curriculum. The Governors were thanked for their support, patience, wise counsel and good humour.
