Course Overview

It is designed for tree surgery practitioners, ecologists, tree officers, park wardens, countryside rangers, estate staff and anyone interested in learning about trees. 

On completion you will be able to: 

  • Have knowledge of the specialist equipment and PPE, risk assessment and the emergency planning required to inspect trees. 

  • Discuss the comparison between surveying and inspecting trees. 

  • Knowledge of case studies and what are the legal ramifications for a person who inspects trees. 

  • Have a knowledge of VTA processes, QTRA processes and other inspection procedures. 

  • Address client wants and needs vs the needs of the tree 

  • Identify common tree species and discuss their growth habits and strategies for decay. 

  • Have an understanding of dendrology, tree anatomy and the functions of the parts that make up the tree. 

  • Understand the life cycle of individual trees and different species of trees from planting to veteran. 

  • Have knowledge of carbon dynamics and resource partitioning. 

  • Identify common pests and diseases. 

  • Identify and have a knowledge of common tree decay fungi and their consequences. 

  • Have a knowledge of tree structure and mechanics. 

  • Identify common problems associated with tree structure and their consequences in a time setting. 

  • Understand how to recommend management recommendations such as works carried out to BS3998. 

  • Record data and take measurements accurately. 

  • Make management recommendations in the interest of public safety and tree conservation. 

  • Practice tree inspection in a controlled environment and debate and discuss your observations and recommendations. 

  • Understand your limitations. 

  • Be prepared for the Lantra Professional Tree Inspection 3 Day Course and exam.

Entry Requirements

The attendance prerequisites are preferably LANTRA Basic Tree Survey and Inspection (BTI) or industry or academic experience.
