The 'Introduction to the Rural Economy' short course is an exciting opportunity for those in the rural land and business sector to upskill their existing knowledge, or for those interested in learning more about the rural economy before embarking on a full degree course in either sustainable agriculture or rural land management. 

The four-day short course aims to provide students with a broad introduction to the rural economy and the role of rural land and property. It explores the structure and performance of traditional and modern industries within the rural sector. Through an interactive lecture series and group discussions, you will investigate different rural land uses within the UK covering both agriculture and other land-based industries including forestry, sporting, leisure and recreation, mineral extraction and renewable energy, conservation and natural capital. Delve into analyses of the main UK farming enterprises and the key factors affecting their financial performance.

Indicative themes covered over the four days:

  • Overview of UK agriculture  

  • Introduction to various agricultural systems, e.g. livestock, combinable crops, high value crops  

  • Farm accounting, particularly gross margin analysis and business appraisal  

  • UK forestry and forest crops, sporting

  • Rural business diversification  

  • Renewable energy  

  • Innovative land-based products and services, e.g. ecosystem services
