This Certificate in Practical Horticulture is an excellent part time course for those wishing to find out more on practical horticulture elements and to see if a career in horticulture can be in your future.
This course, which is taken for half a year, has been designed to introduce students to horticulture and further develop any prior knowledge they may have. Once completed this course can help prepare students for a level 2 qualification or create confidence in finding work such as becoming a garden assistant or nursery assistant.
This course includes units on:
- Identifying plants
- Preparing land for sowing and planting
- Applying organic mulch
- Watering techniques
- Preparing and planting a container for display
- Lift, divide and plant herbaceous perennials
- Sowing seeds indoors
- Propagation from stem cuttings
- Potting up and on
- Care for a planted area

No entry requirements but you must have an interest in the subject.
Steel toe capped boots are required for this course.

The recent restoration of the walled garden has been managed by Plumpton College. One Garden Brighton is the home of the college’s horticultural centre of excellence, a space for training and education. The campus buildings are nestled within the walls itself and you will see students designing, planting and maintaining the grounds as a showcase for innovation.
