Becoming proficient in operating cable avoidance equipment to locate underground service apparatus is an essential and valued operator’s skill for any ground, excavation or Street Works project.
This course will enhance your knowledge, understanding and skills to be able to safely locate and avoid underground utilities apparatus and highway services.
Upon successful completion, you'll gain a certificate of competence and a Lantra Skills ID card.
Utilities apparatus and highways services are important infrastructure that are used to distribute or control a range of services to the public. Utilities are generally considered to include electricity, gas, water, sewerage and communication services.
This training course has been developed to help you understand how to safely undertake the location and avoidance of underground apparatus and highways services.
The amount of instruction you will require will depend largely upon your previous experience, but there are many aspects involved in avoiding danger from underground apparatus and services and many skills that have to be mastered.
When you have completed the training course, you will be assessed for your level of performance and knowledge.
What will be covered? At the end of this course you will be able to:
- Understand and follow safe working practices
- Identify utilities apparatus and highways services encountered during excavation
- Understand and interpret information and plans showing the location of underground apparatus
- Identify the hazards and risks associated with underground utilities apparatus and highways services
- Understand the advantages and limitations of pipe and cable location equipment
- Prepare the pipe and cable location equipment for use
- Safely operate pipe and cable location equipment using the appropriate functions and accessories
- Demonstrate how to mark the location of utilities apparatus and highways services identified, when using pipe and cable location equipment in conjunction with information and plans
- Shut down and store pipe and cable location equipment
